York County is a United States county located in the United States of Virginia. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 56297 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 61027, making it Virginia's 31st largest county. It is spread over 215.52 square miles (558.19 kmē), of which, 105.65 square miles (273.63 kmē ) of it is land and 109.87 square miles (284.56 kmē) of it is water, it is the 91st largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 56297 residents, 20000 households, and 15887 families in the county. The population density was 532.9 people per square mile (205.75/kmē), it is 44th most densely populated county in Virginia. There were 20701 housing units at an average density of 195.9 per square mile (75.64/kmē). The average household size was 2.78 persons, and the average family size was 3.15 persons. In the York County, 29.1% of the population was under the age of 18, 6.6% were 18 to 24, 30.7% were 25 to 44, 24.4% were 45 to 64, and 9.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.5 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 61027, The racial makeup of the county was 79.4% White, 13.94% Black or African American, 0.4% American Indian, 4.09% Asian, 0.15% Native Hawaiian, and 2.02% from two or more races.
