York County is a United States county located in the United States of South Carolina. In 2000, the population was 164614. The July 2008 population estimate is 217448, making it South Carolina's seventh largest county. It is spread over 695.72 miē (1801.91 kmē), of which, 682.45 square miles (1767.54 kmē ) of it is land and 13.27 square miles (34.37 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 21st largest by total area in South Carolina.

The population density was 241.2 people per square mile (93.13/kmē), it is the sixth most densely populated county in the U.S. state of South Carolina. There were 66061 housing units at an average density of 96.8 per square mile (37.37/kmē). The average household size was 2.63 persons, and the average family size was 3.05 persons. The population's age distribution was 26.3% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 217448, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 168601 White, 41927 Black or African American, 1547 American Indian, 2933 Asian, 59 Native Hawaiian, and 2381 from two or more races.
