York City is a one of the York County, Pennsylvania, located in Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. York City had an official population of 40862 in 2000. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 40097, giving it the 14th largest population among Pennsylvania. Its area is just over 5.26 miē (13.62 kmē), of which, 5.2 square miles (13.47 kmē) of it is land and 0.06 square miles (0.16 kmē) of it is water, it is the 104th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 40862 people in the city, organized into 16137 households, and 9249 families living in the city. The population density was 7852.2 people per square mile (3031.75/kmē), making it the 32nd most densely populated city in Pennsylvania. There were 18534 housing units at an average density of 3564.2 per square mile (1376.15/kmē). The average household size was 2.48 people, and the average family size was 3.17 people. In the city Age distribution was 28.4% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88 males. The median age was 31.3 years, the median age of male residents at 30.2 and the median age of female residents at 32.5. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 59.75% White, 25.13% Black or African American, 0.42% American Indian, 1.4% Asian, 0.07% Native Hawaiian, 3.83% from two or more races and 9.4% Other races.
