York City, Alabama


York City is a city in the Sumter County, Alabama, United States. The city has a population of 2854 as per the 2000 census data. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 2515, It is the 156th most populous in the U.S. state of Alabama. The city comprises an area of 7.1 sq mi (18.39 kmē), of which, 7.08 square miles (18.34 kmē) of it is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 kmē) of it is water, it is the 191st largest by area in the U.S. state of Alabama.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2854 people in the city, organized into 1046 households, and 689 families residing in the city. The population density was 403.2 people per square mile (155.68/kmē), it is Alabama's 171st most densely populated city. There were 1209 housing units at an average density of 170.8 per square mile (65.95/kmē). The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.34. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 30.4% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 or older. The median age is 34.5 years, the median age of male residents at 28.8 and the median age of female residents at 37.6. The racial makeup of the city was 591 White, 2235 Black or African American, 2 American Indian, 2 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, 22 from two or more races and 1 Ohter races.
