The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 197658, It is the 28th most populous county in the U.S. state of California. The county spans an area of 1022.89 square miles (2649.27 sq km), of which, 1013.27 square miles (2624.36 sq km) of it is land and 9.62 square miles (24.92 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 17th smallest by total area in California.
