According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Yellowstone County is home to 129352 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 142348, It is most populous county in Montana. The county has a total area of 2649.05 sq mi (6861.01 square kilometre), of which, 2635.15 square miles (6825.01 square kilometre) of it is land and 13.9 square miles (36 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 23rd largest by area in the U.S. state of Montana.

The population density was 49.1 people per square mile (18.96/kmē), making its Montana's most densely populated county. There were 54563 housing units at an average density of 20.7 per square mile (7.99/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.43 persons, and the average family size was 2.98 persons.
