Yates County, New York is a county of the United States of New York. It is home to over 24621 people (2000 census). In July 2008, its estimated population was 24652, making it the third least populous county in New York. The county has a total area of 375.76 sq mi (973.21 square kilometre), of which, 338.24 square miles (876.04 square kilometre) of it is land and 37.52 square miles (97.18 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the tenth smallest by area in the U.S. state of New York.

The population density was 72.8 people per square mile (28.11/kmē), making its New York's 15th least densely populated county. There were 12064 housing units at an average density of 35.7 per square mile (13.78/kmē). The average household size was 2.59 people, and the average family size was 3.08 people. In the Yates County, 26.7% of the population was under the age of 18, 9.3% were 18 to 24, 24.7% were 25 to 44, 23.9% were 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 24652, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.83% White, 0.8% Black or African American, 0.18% American Indian, 0.35% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.82% from two or more races.
