Yankton County is a county in the United States of South Dakota. The population of county in 2000 stood at 21652 as per the Census data. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 21835, making it the ninth most populous county in South Dakota. The county spans an area of 532.62 square miles (1379.48 sq km), of which, 521.55 square miles (1350.81 sq km) of it is land and 11.07 square miles (28.67 sq km) of it is water, giving it the eighth smallest by total area among South Dakota's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 21652 residents, 8187 households, and 5407 families in the county. The population density was 41.5 people per square mile (16.02/kmē), making it the fourth most densely populated county in South Dakota. There were 8840 housing units at an average density of 16.9 per square mile (6.53/kmē). The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.03. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29% from 25 to 44, 22% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.3 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 21835, The racial makeup of the county was 95.14% White, 1.51% Black or African American, 1.94% American Indian, 0.44% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.96% from two or more races.
