Yankton City, Yankton County, South Dakota is a city located in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Yankton City is home to 13528 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 13798, making it the eighth most populous in South Dakota. It is spread over 8 mi˛ (20.72 square kilometre), of which, 7.76 square miles (20.1 square kilometre ) of it is land and 0.24 square miles (0.62 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 20th largest by total area in South Dakota. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in South Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 13528 people in the city, organized into 5369 households, and 3232 families residing in the city. The population density was 1743.2 people per square mile (673.05/km˛), it is the 19th most densely populated city in the U.S. state of South Dakota. There were 5735 housing units at an average density of 739 per square mile (285.33/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.27 persons, and the average family size was 2.96 persons. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 23.4% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95 males. The median age of the city's population was 37.6 years, the median age of male residents at 36.2 and the median age of female residents at 39.4. The racial makeup of the city was 94.35% White, 1.64% Black or African American, 1.58% American Indian, 0.5% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, 0.99% from two or more races and 0.9% Other races.
