According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Wythe County is home to 27599 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 28769, making it Virginia's 60th largest county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 464.62 square miles (1203.36 kmē), of which, 463.24 square miles (1199.79 kmē) of it is land and 1.37 square miles (3.55 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 37th largest by total area among Virginia's county.
