Wrangell-petersburg Census Area is a census area located in Alaska, in the Western Region (Pacific) of United States. The population of the census area was 6684 as per the 2000 census data. The census area's estimated population as of July 2008 was 5910, making it Alaska's 16th largest census area. It covers total area of 9021.21 miē (23364.83 kmē), of which, 5834.94 square miles (15112.43 kmē) of it is land and 3186.27 square miles (8252.4 kmē) of it is water, making it Alaska's eighth smallest county by total area.


As of the census of 2000, there were 6684 residents, 2587 households, and 1765 families in the census area. The population density was 1.1 people per square mile (0.42/kmē), it would be the 11th most densely populated census area in the U.S. state of Alaska. There were 3284 housing units at an average density of 0.6 per square mile (0.23/kmē). The average household size was 2.56 people, and the average family size was 3.11 people. In the census area the population was spread out, with 29.7% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 29% from 25 to 44, 26% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 108.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 107.8 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the census area is 5910, The racial or ethnic makeup of the census area was 4249 White, 18 Black or African American, 1011 American Indian, 119 Asian, 9 Native Hawaiian, and 504 from two or more races.
