The July 2008 population estimate is 86204, making it the fifth most populous county in West Virginia. It is spread over 376.94 miē (976.27 kmē), of which, 367.29 square miles (951.28 kmē ) of it is land and 9.65 square miles (24.99 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 31st largest by total area among West Virginia's county. It is ranks second in the size of its inland waterways in West Virginia.

The population density was 239.6 people per square mile (92.51/kmē), it is the fifth most densely populated county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. In the county the population was spread out, with 23% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 86204, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 83396 White, 1236 Black or African American, 214 American Indian, 514 Asian, 40 Native Hawaiian, and 804 from two or more races.
