Wise County is a one of the county from Virginia's 135 counties, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. It is home to over 40123 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 41703, It is the 40th most populous county in the U.S. state of Virginia. The county has a total area of 405.22 mi˛ (1049.51 sq km), of which, 404.04 square miles (1046.46 sq km) of it is land and 1.18 square miles (3.06 sq km) of it is water, it is the 49th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 40123 people, 16013 households, and 11517 families living in the county. The population density was 99.3 people per square mile (38.34/km˛), it is Virginia's 63rd most densely populated county. There were 17792 housing units at an average density of 44 per square mile (16.99/km˛). The average household size was 2.44 people, and the average family size was 2.91 people. In the county Population was distributed with 23% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 28% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.6 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 41703, The racial makeup of the county was 93.19% White, 5.46% Black or African American, 0.19% American Indian, 0.42% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.73% from two or more races.
