Winston County is a one of the county from Alabama's 67 counties, located in Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 24843. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 23974, giving it the 43rd largest population among Alabama's county. The county encompasses an area of 631.86 square miles (1636.51 sq km ), of which, 614.44 square miles (1591.39 sq km) of it is land and 17.42 square miles (45.12 sq km) of it is water, it is the 44th largest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 40.4 people per square mile (15.6/kmē), giving it the 40th most densely populated county among the Alabama. There were 12502 housing units at an average density of 20.3 per square mile (7.84/kmē). The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.89. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.5 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 23974, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.74% White, 0.74% Black or African American, 0.53% American Indian, 0.14% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.84% from two or more races.
