As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 49879, It is the 19th largest in terms of population. The county encompasses an area of 641.59 mi˛ (1661.71 sq km ), of which, 626.3 square miles (1622.11 sq km) of it is land and 15.29 square miles (39.6 sq km) of it is water, making it the 51st largest by size in Minnesota.
