Its population was estimated at 10283 in July 2008, making it the 11th least populous county in Mississippi. The county encompasses an area of 687.66 square miles (1781.03 sq km ), of which, 676.7 square miles (1752.64 sq km) of it is land and 10.95 square miles (28.36 sq km) of it is water, it is the 25th largest by area in the U.S. state of Mississippi.

The population density was 15.2 people per square mile (5.87/kmē), making it the fourth least densely populated county in Mississippi. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 25.8% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 29% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 108 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 106.6 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 10283, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 30.25% White, 69.21% Black or African American, 0.1% American Indian, 0.02% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.42% from two or more races.
