Wilkes County is a United States county located in the United States of North Carolina. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 65632 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 66655, It is the 37th most populous county in the U.S. state of North Carolina. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 759.93 mi˛ (1968.21 square kilometre), of which, 757.19 square miles (1961.11 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.74 square miles (7.1 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 17th largest by total area in North Carolina.

The population density was 86.7 people per square mile (33.48/km˛), giving it the 56th most densely populated county among the North Carolina. There were 29261 housing units at an average density of 38.6 per square mile (14.9/km˛). The average household size was 2.43 people, and the average family size was 2.87 people. In the Wilkes County, 22.6% of the population was under the age of 18, 7.9% were 18 to 24, 29.7% were 25 to 44, 25.7% were 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.7 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 66655, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 62818 White, 2782 Black or African American, 119 American Indian, 436 Asian, 34 Native Hawaiian, and 466 from two or more races.
