Wetzel County is one of the 55 county of West Virginia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, the population was 17693. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 16329, It is 34th most populous county in West Virginia. The county extends throughout a territory of 361.37 sq mi (935.94 square kilometre ), of which, 359.22 square miles (930.38 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.14 square miles (5.54 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 34th largest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 49.3 people per square mile (19.03/kmē), giving it the 31st most densely populated county among the West Virginia. There were 8313 housing units at an average density of 23.1 per square mile (8.92/kmē). The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.92. The population's age distribution was 23.8% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 16329, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 98.51% White, 0.31% Black or African American, 0.11% American Indian, 0.42% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.62% from two or more races.
