Westmoreland County is a county located in the United States of Virginia. Westmoreland County had an official population of 16718 in 2000. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 17462, making it Virginia's 86th largest county. The county has a total area of 252.64 mi˛ (654.33 square kilometre), of which, 229.18 square miles (593.57 square kilometre) of it is land and 23.46 square miles (60.76 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 83rd largest by size in Virginia.

The population density was 72.9 people per square mile (28.15/km˛), it is Virginia's 80th most densely populated county. There were 9286 housing units at an average density of 40.5 per square mile (15.64/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.43 persons, and the average family size was 2.91 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 23% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 27.8% from 45 to 64, and 19% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males. Its population was estimated at 17462 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 68.96% White, 29.04% Black or African American, 0.36% American Indian, 0.54% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 1.09% from two or more races.
