Wellsburg City is a city located in Brooke County, West Virginia, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 2891. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 2591, It is the 52nd largest in terms of population. The city has a total area of 1.39 sq mi (3.6 kmē), of which, 0.93 square miles (2.41 kmē) of it is land and 0.46 square miles (1.19 kmē) of it is water, it is the 116th largest by area in the U.S. state of West Virginia. It is ranks 14 in the size of its inland waterways in West Virginia.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 2891 people, 1361 households, and 815 families living in the city. The population density was 3104 people per square mile (1198.46/kmē), giving it the eighth most densely populated city among the West Virginia. There were 1493 housing units at an average density of 1605.4 per square mile (619.85/kmē). The average household size was 2.12 people, and the average family size was 2.78 people. The racial makeup of the city was 96.68% White, 2.01% Black or African American, 0.1% American Indian, 0.1% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, 1.07% from two or more races and 0.03% Other races.
