Wells County, Indiana is a county located in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 27600. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 27964, giving it the 56th largest population among Indiana's county. The county spans an area of 370.41 sq mi (959.36 square kilometre), of which, 369.96 square miles (958.19 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.45 square miles (1.17 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 27th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Indiana.

The population density was 74.6 people per square mile (28.8/kmē), making its Indiana's 54th most densely populated county. There were 10970 housing units at an average density of 29.7 per square mile (11.47/kmē). The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.09. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 27.3% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.2 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 27964, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 27509 White, 98 Black or African American, 57 American Indian, 88 Asian, 8 Native Hawaiian, and 204 from two or more races.
