Wayne County, Tennessee is a county located in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 16842 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 16614, It is the 23rd least populous county in the U.S. state of Tennessee. The county extends throughout a territory of 735.59 miē (1905.17 kmē ), of which, 733.96 square miles (1900.95 kmē) of it is land and 1.63 square miles (4.22 kmē) of it is water, giving it the second largest by total area among Tennessee's county.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 16842 residents, 5936 households, and 4324 families in the county. The population density was 22.9 people per square mile (8.84/kmē), it is the third least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Tennessee. There were 6701 housing units at an average density of 9.1 per square mile (3.51/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.47 persons, and the average family size was 2.93 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 21.4% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 121.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 125.5 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 16614, The racial makeup of the county was 91.16% White, 7.57% Black or African American, 0.22% American Indian, 0.34% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.69% from two or more races.
