Wayne County is a county located in the United States of North Carolina. Wayne County had an official population of 113329 in 2000. The July 2008 population estimate is 113671, making it the 23rd most populous county in North Carolina. Its area is just over 556.69 mi˛ (1441.82 square kilometre), of which, 552.57 square miles (1431.15 square kilometre) of it is land and 4.12 square miles (10.67 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 34th largest by total area in North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 113329 people, 42612 households, and 30244 families living in the county. The population density was 205.1 people per square mile (79.19/km˛), it is North Carolina's 21st most densely populated county. There were 47313 housing units at an average density of 85.6 per square mile (33.05/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.55 persons, and the average family size was 3.03 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 26.2% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males. Its population was estimated at 113671 in July 2008, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 73631 White, 37093 Black or African American, 480 American Indian, 926 Asian, 88 Native Hawaiian, and 1453 from two or more races.
