Wayne County is a county located in Mississippi, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Wayne County is home to 21216 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 20755, It is Mississippi's 47th most populous county. The county encompasses an area of 813.5 square miles (2106.96 sq km ), of which, 810.32 square miles (2098.72 sq km) of it is land and 3.18 square miles (8.24 sq km) of it is water, it is the seventh largest by area in the U.S. state of Mississippi.

The population density was 26.2 people per square mile (10.12/kmē), making its Mississippi's 22nd least densely populated county. There were 9049 housing units at an average density of 11.2 per square mile (4.32/kmē). The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.15. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 29.2% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 20755, The racial makeup of the county was 12575 White, 8037 Black or African American, 16 American Indian, 33 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 92 from two or more races.
