Watertown City is one of the city of Codington County, South Dakota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, city has a population of 20237 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 20488, It is the fourth largest by population in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The city encompasses an area of 23.09 sq mi (59.8 kmē ), of which, 15.23 square miles (39.45 kmē) of it is land and 7.86 square miles (20.36 kmē) of it is water, it is the fourth largest by area in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in South Dakota.

The population density was 1328.9 people per square mile (513.09/kmē), it is 52nd most densely populated city in South Dakota.
