In 2000, the population was 73150. making it the 17th most populous in Michigan. It is spread over 35.33 sq mi (91.5 kmē), of which, 31.34 square miles (81.17 kmē ) of it is land and 3.99 square miles (10.33 kmē) of it is water, making it Michigan's ninth largest by total area. It is ranks 13 in the size of its inland waterways in Michigan.
