The July 2008 population estimate is 45430, making it the 25th most populous parish in Louisiana. It has total area of 675.97 miē (1750.75 kmē), of which, 669.57 square miles (1734.18 kmē) of it is land and 6.4 square miles (16.58 kmē) of it is water, making it the 33rd largest by size in Louisiana.
