It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 58829, It is the third most populous county in the U.S. state of Vermont. It has total area of 695.43 mi˛ (1801.16 sq km), of which, 689.17 square miles (1784.94 sq km) of it is land and 6.26 square miles (16.21 sq km) of it is water, giving it the sixth largest by total area among Vermont's county. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in Vermont.

The population density was 84.2 people per square mile (32.51/km˛), it is the second most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Vermont. There were 27644 housing units at an average density of 40.1 per square mile (15.48/km˛). The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.91. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 23.5% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 26% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.1 males. Its population was estimated at 58829 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 97.08% White, 0.64% Black or African American, 0.3% American Indian, 0.73% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1.23% from two or more races.
