Washington County, North Carolina is a county of the United States of North Carolina. The population of the county was 13723 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 12946, making it the 11th least populous county in North Carolina. It covers total area of 424.39 sq mi (1099.17 kmē), of which, 348.46 square miles (902.51 kmē) of it is land and 75.93 square miles (196.66 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 64th largest by total area in North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 13723 people in the county, organized into 5367 households, and 3906 families living in the county. The population density was 39.4 people per square mile (15.21/kmē), it is North Carolina's 11th least densely populated county. There were 6174 housing units at an average density of 17.7 per square mile (6.83/kmē). The average household size was 2.52 people, and the average family size was 2.99 people. In the county Age distribution was 26% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 25% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 111.5 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 116.1 females. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 12946, The racial makeup of the county was 48.32% White, 50.22% Black or African American, 0.05% American Indian, 0.61% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 0.75% from two or more races.
