Washington County is a county located in the United States of Maine. It is home to over 33941 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 32499, It is the third smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Maine. It has total area of 3254.91 sq mi (8430.18 kmē), of which, 2568.48 square miles (6652.33 kmē) of it is land and 686.44 square miles (1777.87 kmē) of it is water, it is the fifth largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks third in the size of its inland waterways in Maine.

As of the census of 2000, there were 33941 people, 14118 households, and 9304 families living in the county. The population density was 13.2 people per square mile (5.1/kmē), it is the fourth least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Maine. There were 21919 housing units at an average density of 8.5 per square mile (3.28/kmē). The average household size was 2.34 persons, and the average family size was 2.84 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 22.9% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.9 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 32499, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 30376 White, 172 Black or African American, 1415 American Indian, 154 Asian, 7 Native Hawaiian, and 375 from two or more races.
