Washington County is a one of the county from Iowa's 99 counties, located in Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of the county was 20670 as per the 2000 census data. Its population was estimated at 21343 in July 2008, making it the 28th most populous county in Iowa. The county encompasses an area of 570.77 mi˛ (1478.29 sq km ), of which, 568.71 square miles (1472.95 sq km) of it is land and 2.06 square miles (5.34 sq km) of it is water, making it the 54th largest by size in Iowa.

In the county the population was spread out, with 26.1% under the age of 18, 7% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 107.5 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 111 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 21343, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 98.14% White, 0.53% Black or African American, 0.29% American Indian, 0.31% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.7% from two or more races.
