Washington County is a county in the United States of Indiana. It is home to over 27223 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 27949, It is 57th most populous county in Indiana. The county comprises an area of 516.53 mi˛ (1337.81 sq km), of which, 514.42 square miles (1332.34 sq km) of it is land and 2.12 square miles (5.49 sq km) of it is water, making it Indiana's ninth largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 27223 people in the county, organized into 10264 households, and 7582 families living in the county. The population density was 52.9 people per square mile (20.42/km˛), giving it the 19th least densely populated county among the Indiana. There were 11191 housing units at an average density of 21.8 per square mile (8.42/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.62 persons, and the average family size was 3.05 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 26.5% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 12% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 100.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.2 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 27949, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 27522 White, 116 Black or African American, 41 American Indian, 77 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 191 from two or more races.
