Washington County is a one of the county from Alabama's 67 counties, located in Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Washington County is home to 18097 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 17204, making it the 15th least populous county in Alabama. Its area is just over 1088.54 sq mi (2819.31 sq km), of which, 1080.66 square miles (2798.9 sq km) of it is land and 7.89 square miles (20.44 sq km) of it is water, it is the seventh largest by area in the U.S. state of Alabama.

The population density was 16.7 people per square mile (6.45/kmē), making it the sixth least densely populated county in Alabama. There were 8123 housing units at an average density of 7.5 per square mile (2.9/kmē). The average household size was 2.69 persons, and the average family size was 3.17 persons. In the county Age distribution was 28.7% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 17204, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 11231 White, 4434 Black or African American, 1339 American Indian, 16 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, and 179 from two or more races.
