Washburn County is a one of the county from Wisconsin's 72 counties, located in Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Washburn County is home to 16036 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 16712, It is the 14th least populous county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It has total area of 853.06 miē (2209.42 kmē), of which, 809.68 square miles (2097.06 kmē) of it is land and 43.37 square miles (112.33 kmē) of it is water, it is the 35th largest by area in the U.S. state of Wisconsin.

As of the census of 2000, there were 16036 people, 6604 households, and 4531 families residing in the county. The population density was 19.8 people per square mile (7.64/kmē), it would be the 12th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. There were 10814 housing units at an average density of 13.4 per square mile (5.17/kmē). The average household size was 2.39 persons, and the average family size was 2.88 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 23.8% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.3 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 16712, The racial makeup of the county was 16182 White, 52 Black or African American, 222 American Indian, 38 Asian, 4 Native Hawaiian, and 214 from two or more races.
