It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 48087, It is the 15th most populous county in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It has total area of 618.76 mi˛ (1602.58 sq km), of which, 586.61 square miles (1519.31 sq km) of it is land and 32.15 square miles (83.27 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 32nd largest by total area in Mississippi. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in Mississippi.

The population density was 84.6 people per square mile (32.66/km˛), making it the 17th most densely populated county in Mississippi.
