It covers total area of 543.17 mi˛ (1406.8 square kilometre), of which, 542.52 square miles (1405.12 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.65 square miles (1.68 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 49th largest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois.

For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 17541, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 95.76% White, 2.12% Black or African American, 0.23% American Indian, 0.66% Asian, 0.15% Native Hawaiian, and 1.07% from two or more races.
