According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1294.11 square miles (3351.73 kmē), of which, 1281.74 square miles (3319.69 kmē) of it is land and 12.36 square miles (32.01 kmē) of it is water, it is the 24th largest by area in the U.S. state of North Dakota.

The population density was 9.7 people per square mile (3.75/kmē), it is the 12th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 24.9% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 25% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 100 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.9 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 10880, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 96.66% White, 0.47% Black or African American, 1.52% American Indian, 0.42% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.91% from two or more races.
