Wakefield City is a city located in Gogebic County, Michigan, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 2085. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 1846, making it Michigan's 308th largest. The city has a total area of 8.52 sq mi (22.07 kmē), of which, 7.97 square miles (20.64 kmē) of it is land and 0.55 square miles (1.42 kmē) of it is water, making it Michigan's 76th largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2085 residents, 883 households, and 536 families in the city. The population density was 261.5 people per square mile (100.97/kmē), it is 39th least densely populated city in Michigan. There were 1035 housing units at an average density of 129.9 per square mile (50.15/kmē). The average household size was 2.15 persons, and the average family size was 2.76 persons. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 16.1% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 22.4% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 30.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
