As of July 2008, the estimated population was 27068, making it the 55th most populous in North Carolina. Its area is just over 7.9 square miles (20.46 square kilometre), of which, 7.8 square miles (20.2 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 102nd largest by size in North Carolina.
