Wake County is one of the 100 county of North Carolina, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The population of the county was 627846 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 866410, It is the second largest county by population in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The county spans an area of 857.26 miē (2220.29 kmē), of which, 831.92 square miles (2154.66 kmē) of it is land and 25.33 square miles (65.6 kmē) of it is water, making it North Carolina's 12th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 627846 people in the county, organized into 242040 households, and 158765 families living in the county. The population density was 754.7 people per square mile (291.39/kmē), it is fourth most densely populated county in North Carolina. There were 258953 housing units at an average density of 311.3 per square mile (120.19/kmē). The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.06. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 25.1% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 36.5% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 7.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.5 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 866410, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 630417 White, 177610 Black or African American, 4662 American Indian, 39576 Asian, 778 Native Hawaiian, and 13367 from two or more races.
