Virginia City is a United States city located in the Cass County, Illinois, United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 1728 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 1664, It is the 530th most populous in the U.S. state of Illinois. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.1 sq mi (2.85 kmē), of which, 1.08 square miles (2.8 kmē) of it is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 kmē) of it is water, making it Illinois's 669th largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1728 people in the city, organized into 724 households, and 453 families residing in the city. The population density was 1593.2 people per square mile (615.14/kmē), giving it the 472nd most densely populated city among the Illinois. There were 794 housing units at an average density of 735.2 per square mile (283.86/kmē). The average household size was 2.31 persons, and the average family size was 2.95 persons. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.6 males. The median age of the city's population was 41.2 years, The median age of males was 38 years, for females the median age was 44.1 years. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 98.84% White, 0.12% Black or African American, 0.17% American Indian, 0.23% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, 0.52% from two or more races and 0.12% Other races.
