Vilas County is a county in the United States of Wisconsin. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Vilas County is home to 21033 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 21919 in July 2008, giving it the 49th largest population among Wisconsin's county. The county comprises an area of 1017.85 sq mi (2636.22 sq km), of which, 873.72 square miles (2262.92 sq km) of it is land and 144.13 square miles (373.29 sq km) of it is water, it is the 21st largest by area in the U.S. state of Wisconsin.

The population density was 24.1 people per square mile (9.31/kmē), it is the 16th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. There were 22397 housing units at an average density of 25.6 per square mile (9.88/kmē). The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.73. In the county Population was distributed with 20.7% under the age of 18, 5% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 28.5% from 45 to 64, and 22.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.8 males. Its population was estimated at 21919 in July 2008, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 19499 White, 84 Black or African American, 2069 American Indian, 97 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 168 from two or more races.
