Vance County, North Carolina is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. Vance County had an official population of 42954 in 2000. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 42891, giving it the 59th largest population among North Carolina's county. It is spread over 269.82 sq mi (698.83 square kilometre), of which, 253.52 square miles (656.61 square kilometre ) of it is land and 16.31 square miles (42.24 square kilometre) of it is water, making it North Carolina's 11th smallest county by total area.

There were 18196 housing units at an average density of 71.8 per square mile (27.72/kmē). The average household size was 2.6 and the average family size was 3.06. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 27.1% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.3 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 42891, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 48.81% White, 49.49% Black or African American, 0.28% American Indian, 0.62% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 0.78% from two or more races.
