Van Buren County is a county located in Tennessee, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Van Buren County is home to 5508 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 5481, It is the second least populous county in the U.S. state of Tennessee. The county extends throughout a territory of 274.59 square miles (711.18 kmē ), of which, 273.46 square miles (708.26 kmē) of it is land and 1.14 square miles (2.95 kmē) of it is water, making it the 16th smallest by size in Tennessee.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5508 people in the county, organized into 2180 households, and 1620 families living in the county. The population density was 20.1 people per square mile (7.76/kmē), giving it the second least densely populated county among the Tennessee. There were 2453 housing units at an average density of 9 per square mile (3.47/kmē). The average household size was 2.49 people, and the average family size was 2.9 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 23% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 14% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.3 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 5481, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 5415 White, 23 Black or African American, 10 American Indian, 4 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 29 from two or more races.
