Van Buren County is one of the 83 county of Michigan, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 76263. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 77801, It is Michigan's 25th most populous county. The county spans an area of 1090.19 square miles (2823.58 sq km), of which, 610.86 square miles (1582.12 sq km) of it is land and 479.33 square miles (1241.46 sq km) of it is water, making it Michigan's 29th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 76263 people in the county, organized into 27982 households, and 20327 families residing in the county. The population density was 124.8 people per square mile (48.19/kmē), making it the 26th most densely populated county in Michigan. There were 33975 housing units at an average density of 55.6 per square mile (21.47/kmē). The average household size was 2.66 persons, and the average family size was 3.1 persons. The population's age distribution was 28.1% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.6 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 77801, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 71624 White, 3611 Black or African American, 814 American Indian, 307 Asian, 10 Native Hawaiian, and 1435 from two or more races.
