Van Buren County, Arkansas is a county located in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 16192 as per the Census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 16575, It is the 48th largest in terms of population. The county spans an area of 724.32 square miles (1875.98 kmē), of which, 711.51 square miles (1842.8 kmē) of it is land and 12.81 square miles (33.18 kmē) of it is water, making it the 30th largest by size in Arkansas.


According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 16192 residents, 6825 households, and 4804 families in the county. The population density was 22.8 people per square mile (8.8/kmē), it is 51st most densely populated county in Arkansas. There were 9164 housing units at an average density of 12.9 per square mile (4.98/kmē). The average household size was 2.33 persons, and the average family size was 2.79 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 21.5% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 23% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 23.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 103.4 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 107.6 females. Its population was estimated at 16575 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 96.6% White, 0.84% Black or African American, 0.8% American Indian, 0.34% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 1.36% from two or more races.
