Van Buren City is a city located in Crawford County, Arkansas, in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 18986. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 22543, It is Arkansas's 20th largest by population . The city comprises an area of 15.85 square miles (41.05 kmē), of which, 15.06 square miles (39.01 kmē) of it is land and 0.8 square miles (2.07 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 30th largest by total area among Arkansas. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in Arkansas.

As of the census of 2000, there were 18986 residents, 6947 households, and 5179 families in the city. The population density was 1260.7 people per square mile (486.76/kmē), it is 42nd most densely populated city in Arkansas. There were 7427 housing units at an average density of 493.2 per square mile (190.43/kmē). The average household size was 2.67 persons, and the average family size was 3.12 persons.
