Its population was estimated at 72207 in July 2008, It is sixth most populous county in New Mexico. It covers total area of 1068.21 miē (2766.65 kmē), of which, 1067.63 square miles (2765.15 kmē) of it is land and 0.58 square miles (1.5 kmē) of it is water, making it New Mexico's second smallest county by total area.
