Upshur County is one of the 55 county of West Virginia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 23404 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 23582, making it the 27th most populous county in West Virginia. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 354.86 sq mi (919.08 square kilometre), of which, 354.76 square miles (918.82 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 square kilometre) of it is water, making it West Virginia's 35th largest county by total area.

The population density was 66 people per square mile (25.48/kmē), it is 22nd most densely populated county in West Virginia. There were 10751 housing units at an average density of 30.3 per square mile (11.7/kmē). The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.92. In the county the population was spread out, with 22.6% under the age of 18, 12.6% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.4 males. Its population was estimated at 23582 in July 2008, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.81% White, 0.82% Black or African American, 0.19% American Indian, 0.57% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.61% from two or more races.
