Union Parish is one of the 64 parish of Louisiana, located towards the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. Union Parish had an official population of 22803 in 2000. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the parish is 22692, making it Louisiana's 40th largest parish. The parish encompasses an area of 905.28 mi˛ (2344.66 square kilometre ), of which, 877.6 square miles (2272.97 square kilometre) of it is land and 27.68 square miles (71.69 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 19th largest by area in the U.S. state of Louisiana.

As of the census of 2000, there were 22803 people in the parish, organized into 8857 households, and 6412 families living in the parish. The population density was 26 people per square mile (10.04/km˛), it is 13th least densely populated parish in Louisiana. There were 10873 housing units at an average density of 12.4 per square mile (4.79/km˛). The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.01. In the parish the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 105.8 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 110.1 females. The July 2008 population estimate is 22692, The racial or ethnic makeup of the parish was 71.51% White, 27.39% Black or African American, 0.22% American Indian, 0.3% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 0.54% from two or more races.
